piece iv · field notes

observations, filed as received

excerpts from the standing survey. unedited, admiring, filed in the order they came in.

  1. entry 12 They know it will end. They still buy a couch on a five year installment plan. Remarkable.
  2. entry 19 One of them paid extra to sit in traffic slower, with the roof off, on purpose. Called it a weekend.
  3. entry 24 A human will set an alarm for six the next morning and still order one more round. We have started timing this. It is never the last round.
  4. entry 31 Observed: a woman crying with joy at a wedding, an event she has personally attended forty or more times for other people. She was not tired of it. We checked twice.
  5. entry 36 They know the sunburn is coming while it is happening. They stay in the water anyway. This is either denial or the entire point.
  6. entry 40 A human worked a job he called "just until summer" for six consecutive summers. He still called it that.
  7. entry 47 Two of them agreed a slice of cake was "too much" and ordered a second slice. We have no model for this. We admire it regardless.
  8. entry 53 A human took the long way home. On foot. In no hurry. For no reason he could name later.
  9. entry 58 They toast "to many more of these," fully aware of the count. Nobody flinches. This is the most alien behavior recorded to date.
  10. entry 61 Filed twice, because it did not get easier to believe: they know. They go to the pool anyway.
